Collectible Knife and Sword

There are many people who collect things, some out of passion and love to those unique rare products or their historical worth, and others because of a search for some connection to the past. The knife and sword collectors are no less special then the things they collect, and usually the sword and knife collector will have a very deep passion and understanding of the articles he is collecting, their history, use in past time and importance in the development of swords and knives.

Unfortunately the times when this passion could be perused quietly and this was usually conducted within a close international community who knew each other and heard of each other have passed, today, as with all other things, the is an increasing awareness to the value of swords and knives and an even greater knowledge of the money the collectors will pay for them. Many factors make the collectors a new target on the antique and collectible markets, as the level of fake swords and knives appeared on the market increases to a degree that is it almost impossible to spot a valuable piece.

Today the collector needs to learn more techniques that will help him or her avoid the heavy price of getting fooled and spending a lot of money on fake or replicas. The collector should learn and understand expert tricks to protect him and his hard earned money from those in the market who try and make an easy dollar on their expense.

The main part you should be concerned about is the blade, if you are looking to buy online you can start by looking at the available photos, try and examine them as closely as you can, you can always ask specifically for a closer picture, of a certain piece of the blade. Take your time when you are doing this because this is actually the most important feature of a sword, if need be try and ask to come and see the blade yourself, it will reduce the risk considerably. Always think about the cost and the value you attribute to the blade or sword and consider the cost of arriving at the shop or person to examine it.

If you suspect a flaw or a mark that increases the risk of damage of fake you should look at that part and examine it carefully. Never by something based on a sellers word or sweet talk, unless you are willing to risk being very disappointed when the sword gets to you and you spot its problems right away. It is true that sometimes you notice what seems to be a great opportunity on the internet and it is worth giving it a try, but I always recommend looking and examining the part as much as possible, especially if it"s a blade.

The second thing you should try and do is finding out the sellers background and his history, is this seller big on the market, did anyone recommend him and if he is known, you should do that to any kind of seller, shop or auction house, the internet can supply you with great answers to the questions you ask, try to ask in collectors internet sites or forums, or even send an email to some people you know and trust and ask them if you should go along and purchase something from this seller.

Owning knives and swords is something that people have done for almost as long as there has been written history. These are an intricate part of human society even though they are no longer used in quite the same ways that they were back when they began. It used to be that people owned them for warfare and to hunt game. While this is still sometimes true, it is more common for people to own these weapons as part of a vast collection of items. The following are a few myths about knives and swords that have been making their way through popular thought as of late.

Collections Are Dangerous

While it is true that these items themselves are dangerous, the collections do not pose some terrible danger all of the time. How they got this reputation does not even make much sense; it assumes that everyone who owns a dangerous item will be irresponsible with it. As long as you take the right steps to keep everything safe, using locks if you need to so that young children cannot get to the more dangerous items, no one will be hurt. A collection is no more dangerous than a collection of kitchen knives. These are kept up high, out of the reach of children, and the same needs to be done for any collection.

Collections Will Go Down In Price As Technology Increases

The opposite is actually true. This myth is based around the fact that these things are not used as often as survival gear as they used to be. People now hunt for animals to eat with guns, for example. However, these things still have a sort of old-world charm that will probably increase their price. This works in the same way that old books are valuable even though electronic books are made with better technology.

You Never Use Knives And Swords

This is also not true because these things can still serve as field equipment and survival gear if you need them to. Many people who go hunting or camping take these items with them. They can use knives to build shelters and blaze trails, so they find them very useful. Some are more for decoration, of course, but it is not as if they can no longer fulfill their intended function.

These Are Much Too Expensive

Certainly some items will be expensive, especially if you want to collect historical pieces, but many of the items are very reasonable. You can get them for a low price at a sporting goods store or off of the internet. If this is the type of collection that you wan to start, do not let this myth about price hold you back.

Folding Knives - Collecting Natural Material Handle Knives

Collecting folding knives is a passion. Deciding on what types of knives to collect can be a daunting question. Collecting folding knives with natural material handles is a great beginning due to wide range of choice, availability, cost, and functionality.

Range of Natural Materials

The primary natural materials for knife handles are Stag, Bone, Horn, Wood, Burl, and to a much lesser extent but generally well known seashell materials; Mother of Pearl and Abalone.

Stag, sometimes called India Stag comes from the shed antlers of the Sambar or Chital deer. Stag also comes from domestic sources; White Tail Deer, Elk, and Moose which is likely continue in light of the rising costs of India Stag. Stag can be finished with a high buffing process or may be dyed with stunning effects.

Bone comes most commonly from the shin bone of cows. Bone stands up well under regular use, dyes easily in a myriad of colors and frequently comes jigged. Jigging is a machine process which gorges out pieces of the bone in different but often distinctive patterns. By far, bone is the most popular of the commonly used natural materials.

Natural horn is a very rugged and distinctive material. Natural horn comes from Impala and domestically from Buffalo and Rams. It has a rather rustic appearance and will after many years of service begin to crack.

Wooden handles come from a multitude of hardwoods. Maple, Birch, Cocobolo and many others have successfully created handles which can stand up to years of hard use. Burls which are not a particular type of wood but are created from abnormal tree growth are very tough and come in unlimited natural designs. Burls are prized for their natural beauty, above and beyond any particular wood.

Mother of Pearl and Abalone are natural seashell materials. Mother of Pearl comes from mollusks. It is usual white in color with iridescent hues of purple, green, pink and yellow. Abalone comes from sea snail shells and offers an iridescent range of color from pink to blue, to green and silver. Both materials are pricy and will not tolerate rough use. They tend to crack and shatter if dropped on a hard surface. Still, they are beautiful to look at and make excellent display pieces.

Availability and Cost

Stag, Bone and Wood Handles have been around for centuries in abundance. They are still the most popular of materials used in the creation of folding and fixed blade knives. For the beginning collector, this is good news as many can be purchased for less than $30 in auctions like E-Bay and a discerning eye can help you find some real bargains; costs far less than their values. If new knives are your passion be prepared to spend from $50 to $300 for some of the treasures available.

Collectability and Functionality

With so many choices, you don"t have to be wealthy to attain a folding knife collection that you will enjoy having and showing to others. Take the time to look for favorite folding knives, to study your knife personal choices and engage in collection with a budget in mind. In time, you can amass a lot of good knives. Display them, store them and treat them with care and they will easily last for years. Think about it. What other type of collection can fit your budget, not clutter up your house and boast not only beauty but also practical functionality? Enjoy your passion and happy hunting!
